One more day until December begins. Today I thought a lot about the structure of my book. (I often feel like a third of writing is thinking about how to best structure information. Which information to bring to readers first, then second, etc. ...similar to designing a data visualization, actually.)

I have sorted information into three (four?) chapters so far:

  1. Design for quick readability
  2. Keep it accessible
  3. Make it beautiful
  4. Package it all as a style guide

"1. Design for quick readability" covers everything from "what's your statement? highlight that" to "don't use rainbow gradients". I kept them together so far because the decision for or against rainbow gradients is also highly dependent on what you want to show.

But there are other ways to structure such a book.

I could simply sort all blog posts I've written about color in a chronological order. This would be all about "how did Lisa learn more and more about colors".

Or I could bring the color advice in a more educational/philosophical order, starting with how to design a visualization well in shades of grey ("in the beginning, there was only darkness. And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light."), basically covering contrast, and then moving slowly to hue and saturation.

🤔

Maybe it doesn't need to be decided today or tomorrow. The structure I have right now does work fine.

Open Question: Is there a better word for "readability"? Is the word "readability" saying what I want to say?
